Become a Volunteer

The Volunteer Program is critical to the ongoing success of the agency. Without the dedication, commitment and hard work of community volunteers, the Victim Services Program of Toronto would be unable to fulfill its mission and mandate.

The Volunteer Program actively recruits, screens, trains and engages qualified volunteers to support all aspects of agency programming, service delivery, operations, evaluation and organizational management.

To become a volunteer you:

  • Are at least 19 years old
  • Are able to make a one year committment to two four–hour shifts per month
  • Have a gift for compassion and understanding
  • Are a mature, non–judgmental individual
  • Have translating skills and a knowledge of another language or cultural sensitivities
  • Have a life experience you’ve overcome that you can relate to a victim’s situation

The volunteer process:

  • Attend an orientation meeting to learn about the Volunteer Program
  • One-on-one interview
  • Security check* and personal reference check
  • 30 hour training program on roles and responsibilities
  • 4 shifts in the crisis pod working with a mentor
  • On-the-job continuous training
*Victim Services is located in the same building as Toronto Police Service Headquarters. We have access to non-public areas and share some technology and services. As a result, everyone who volunteers at Victim Services Toronto must successfully complete a Toronto Police Service criminal reference check.

Our 150 extensively trained community volunteers work along side our crisis counselors and provide over 20,000 hours of direct services. Join our team of dedicated volunteers donating their time and expertise supporting all aspects of our programs and services. You’ll have excellent training, evaluation and recognition of your contributions. Paired with a trained crisis counselor and working directly with victims, this is a volunteer experience where you can have a direct impact on someone’s life!
